Safer Eating
Safer Eating at Our Nursery

At the federation, we believe mealtimes should be safe, healthy, happy and enjoyable for every child.
How We Keep Children Safe
We follow clear safer eating procedures in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidance.
Children sit safely during snack times and mealtimes.
Adults closely supervise children while eating.
Food is prepared appropriately to reduce the risk of choking.
We provide a calm, positive eating environment.
We promote healthy eating, independence and good hygiene.
We carefully manage individual allergies and dietary requirements.
Meet Arlo – Our Allergy Mascot!

Arlo helps our children learn about food allergies and how we can keep ourselves and our friends safe.
Through stories, discussions and everyday routines, Arlo teaches children that:
We never share or swap our food and drinks.
Some foods can make our friends poorly.
We always wash our hands before eating.
We tell a grown-up if someone feels unwell.
Everyone has different needs, and we look after each other.
Healthy Eating and Independence
We encourage children to explore a variety of healthy foods, make choices and develop independence during mealtimes. Fresh drinking water is available throughout the day.

Working Together with Families
We work closely with parents and carers to ensure children's allergies, intolerances and dietary needs are understood and safely managed.
How You Can Help at Home
Encourage your child to sit down when eating.
Cut grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthways into quarters.
Remind children not to share food or drinks.
Practise washing hands before meals.
Talk about Arlo and how we keep our friends safe.

Please keep us informed of any changes to your child's dietary or medical needs.
Together, we help children develop healthy habits and learn how to keep themselves and others safe.
